Web development is more than just web design.

It's the building of a website that works. As a web development company, we may be involved with all of the following aspects of a website, whether performing the services or working with clients or other companies to integrate them into a website:

Hosting and maintenance may be available through Division Point for some websites.

Building a website with Division Point

After your initial inquiry, take as much time as you need to think about questions you have for us and any questions we may have asked you based on the initial information you've provided. You can then schedule up to two hours of free in-person or telephone consultation time, which may be broken into smaller blocks of time.

Below are some questions you may consider before contacting us. The more information you give us early on about your project, the sooner you'll know whether we may be the right company for you. Be aware, however, that some of your answers may change as you learn more about building a website and marketing your organization on the web.

  • For everyone:
How much and what kind of content (for example, text, photographs, video) do you need to present? Will you be providing all content to your web developer as you would like it to appear on your site, or will you need additional services such as logo design, photography or photo editing, or copywriting and editing to be delivered as part of your website project?
Are you interested in finding out whether a content management system would be a good choice for your website?
  • For businesses:
Would you benefit from an online appointment scheduling or reservation system or e-commerce technology to allow you to sell products or provide services online?
  • For nonprofit organizations:
Do you need programming that enables visitors to join or donate online? Would you like to offer members-only access to certain areas of your site?

You don't have to go into the discussion knowing all these answers, but the consultation helps make important decisions, from whether our company is a good match for yours to what features will be useful to achieve your goals and affordable for your budget.

Once we've decided to work together, Division Point will draw up a scope and a contract proposal. The contract will define what you are paying* us to deliver, and what we need from you to deliver it (mainly, the content you want us to put on the web, and said payment).

After we've all signed the contract, we will establish a schedule. A client may have a precise deadline or a preferred range for site launch, but either way, we all need to keep on schedule with certain milestones to finish the project in a timely manner.

*We've put together a whole page to address possibly the most frequently asked question about building a website: What will it cost?

To begin discussing a possible project, fill out our website inquiry form or give us a call at 703-467-5600. (Though located in Northern Virginia, within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, we're happy to consider long-distance projects).

What about Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

We aim to help clients' sites reach their target audiences. We want clients to understand good, and effective, ways of achieving that, and ways that may backfire, resulting in penalties from the search engines or a spammy, low-quality appearance to potential customers.

Search engines don't necessarily favor sites that focus more on SEO tactics than on useful content, and may change their methodology to keep ahead of those sites. We focus on building quality websites that merit higher search rankings, and most importantly, will interest your visitors in connecting with you.

As Google itself explains, "[A] useful test is to ask, 'Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?'" That is a bit overstated, as there are things that help search engine placement and won't hurt your users' experience of your website that you or we as web developers wouldn't think or bother to do if not for search engines, and we're certainly interested in helping you with those. But it's important to keep in mind that simply drawing someone to your site isn't the last step in winning a new customer.
